Virginia State Government Server Systems Engineer in Chesterfield, Virginia

We seek a dynamic, committed, purpose driven candidate for our Server Systems Engineer (IT Technology Specialist II) position.
The Server Systems Engineer position will manage all efforts involved in supporting, customizing, installing and maintaining the network servers used to conduct operations at Virginia State University.
Ensures that systems hardware, operating systems, software systems, and relate procedures adhere to VSU and Commonwealth polices, standards, and guidelines.
Responsibilities include systems administration engineering and provisioning, operations and support, maintenance and research and development to ensure continual innovation. Install new/rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, setting, directories, storage, etc. In accordance with standards and project/operational requirements.
Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resource, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backup. Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resources optimization as required. Configure CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required.
Performs regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions. Performs regular archival and purge as necessary. Create, change, and delete user accounts per request. Apply OS patched and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configured/add new services as necessary. Provides Tier III/other support per request from various constituencies. Provides the primary application support for University application assigned to this position. Investigate and troubleshoot issues. Diagnose and recover from hardware or software failures. Coordinates and communicates with impacted constituencies.
Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning; maintains operational configuration, or other procedure.
Experience in server system administration, backup/restores, system hardening, and patch management. Experience with Active Director Administration. Working knowledge of VMWare, and Microsoft Server operating environments. Experience in installing, configuring, and maintaining servers running various OS platforms, hands-on hardware and software troubleshooting experience, familiarity with TCP/IP protocols, database administration, and web server/site administration. Working knowledge of popular storage systems, including SAN and NAS. Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities. Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently. Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, vendors, and the public.
Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field highly preferred. MCP Certification preferred. Experience working in a higher education environment.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and several years’ experience providing server systems administration in a networked environment including troubleshooting, training, or an equivalent field highly preferred. Experience working in a higher education environment preferred. Experience with MCSA, Red Hat, and SAML.
