Purpose of Position:

As evidenced by the university’s motto, “Make it Real,” VCU aims to be relevant and have a measurable positive impact on our students, our community and our world. As part of this goal, we are committed to building Relevant Experiential and Applied Learning (REAL) activities into the curriculum for all VCU students. These experiences will help our students develop as scholars, and to translate their knowledge into action and service that contributes to the world around them. These REAL activities are academically anchored and center on four themes: Career, Create, Discover and Serve. VCU is committed to becoming a leader in the ways in which we transform the educational experience of our students, and the REAL Initiative plays a vital role in that objective. The Assistant Vice Provost for REAL, in partnership with the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, will provide the overall leadership in achieving this goal.

In addition to their duties with the REAL Initiative, the Assistant Vice Provost for REAL serves as a member of the academic affairs leadership team, under the supervision of the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs. The Assistant Vice Provost will work closely with deans and other school-level administrators, REAL liaisons and advisory boards to strategically collaborate with faculty as well as corporate and community partners to expand and enhance the quality of REAL activities.

This position, therefore, will require a leader with vision, considerable skills in change management, program development, outstanding relationship-building qualities, and an entrepreneurial spirit. We are looking for candidates that come from an academic background and/or has experience in executive leadership in the private, public, or non-profit sectors. The successful candidate will demonstrate: a) the potential for success to support REAL within a shared governance academic environment, b) proven success working collaboratively across a diverse organization including community partners, c) a sophisticated understanding of the impact of experiential/applied learning on student outcomes in higher education.

Position Responsibilities:

• Advance VCU’s preeminence in Relevant Experiential and Applied Learning (REAL), building on a diverse array of current activities. • Collaborate with multiple constituencies to develop and implement plans to advance REAL in a way consistent with the mission, vision and strategic priorities of the university. • Ensure appropriate policies, personnel, systems, technology, and resources are in place to ensure high-quality REAL instruction and service. • Work with administrators and faculty throughout the university to support student success in REAL programs, and ensure the programs are high quality and sustainable. • Collaborate with the schools/colleges and other units (e.g., student affairs, living learning programs, global education and strategic enrollment management) to integrate REAL appropriately throughout all student experiences. • Drive development of innovative models of experiential learning. • Work with faculty to enhance and improve the quality of REAL offerings through the adoption of best practices. • Build key relationships with community and corporate partners at a local, national, and global level. • Participate in relevant university policy and planning committees/meetings. • Serve as part of the leadership team for academic affairs, and advance the mission and vision of that unit as assigned by the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs.

Required Qualifications:

• Experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to doing so at VCU • Experience with curricular design and leadership, or demonstrated understanding of the complexities of a large, intricate, faculty-driven curriculum. • Ability to develop a program and demonstrated success as a liaison across diverse stakeholders • Experience effectively coordinating a diverse portfolio of responsibilities. • Knowledge of leading issues, trends, and best practices in experiential learning that supports student learning. • Able to use technology to drive innovation in a complex organization. • Able to build and sustain a highly functioning team. • Evidence of budget and fiscal experience and accountability, with the demonstrated ability to develop and manage expense and revenue budgets for experiential/applied learning programs. • Demonstrated success in developing and implementing business, strategic, and operating plans. • Demonstrated ability in shared governance among diverse groups, including deans, faculty, students, enrollment management, student affairs, university relations, corporate and community partners. • Strong analytic, problem-solving, presentation, and written and oral communication skills; flexibility, responsiveness, and impeccable follow-through. • An understanding of, and commitment to support, the vision, mission, and values of VCU. • Positive attitude, proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations and demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion. • A Master’s degree.

Preferred Qualifications:

• A terminal degree appropriate to the applicant’s academic field of expertise or executive leadership experience. • Proven success with organizational change management. • A record of research, scholarly and creative activity or equivalent corporate experience suitable for a faculty appointment in one of the disciplines of the university. • Experience teaching or leadership in experiential/applied learning. • At least five years of successful administrative experience.
