The purpose of the position is to ensure the safety of lifeguard staff and public swimmers in Aquatics. The position is responsible for supervising the compliance of all policy and procedures by staff and the general public for safe, quality services in Aquatics. The position works within a general outline of work to be performed, and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.

Example of Duties:

The City of Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities is seeking a highly qualified candidates to fill the position of Head Lifeguard (Seasonal). The incumbent is responsible formonitoring the compliance of all policies and procedures by staff and the general public for safe, quality aquatics services. This is a seasonal assignment not to exceed a period of 12 months.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assistingthe Swimming Pool Manager with supervisingstaff
  • Performing all lifeguard responsibilities including monitoring pool activities, enforcing facility rules and regulations, administering first aid, and performing water rescues as necessary
  • Assisting with the scheduling of lifeguards to ensure adequate pool coverage during operating hours
  • Ensuring that lifeguards perform in accordance with established safety regulations and policies; following emergency action plan and procedures
  • Keeping management informed of pool maintenance needs including cleaning, chemical adjustments, and repairs
  • May assist management with composing correspondence, reports, and other general office functions
  • Performing other related duties as assigned

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma/GED or specialized vocational training
  • Two (2) seasons in Richmond Parks and Recreation or six months experience.
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.
  • CPO/AFO certification required
  • Current WSI certification required
  • Current Lifeguard certification required
  • Current First Aid and CPR/AED certifications required;
  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency in swimming and rescue skills;
  • Water Aerobics Certification AEA/YMCA/ US Water Fitness Association;
  • Bilingual with Spanish as a second language is a plus;
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.
